Giving Tuesday: Provide a Safe and Healthy Home for Neighbors in Need
Giving Tuesday is the annual 24-hour day of giving when people worldwide give back to support the causes they care most about. This special day, which is always celebrated the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, kicks off the holiday season of giving. It has grown into a global movement inspiring millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate each year. Last year yielded $3.1B in giving in the United States on a single Tuesday.
Locally, #GivingTuesdayCLT, now in its 10th year, is an unprecedented collaboration of hundreds of Charlotte nonprofits as well as corporations, local businesses, community organizations, and individuals coming together through good. Over these past 10 years, more than $40M has been given to local nonprofits in Mecklenburg County.
This Giving Tuesday, Rebuilding Together of Greater Charlotte is asking the community for $25,000 to support the neighbors in need who live behind every front door, where there’s a story of home and family. A home should be a safe and healthy place to rely on, but that’s not the reality for many low-income homeowners in the Greater Charlotte area who can’t afford the rising costs of maintenance.
The average repair and modification project done by RTGC costs $25,000, and each project corrects 25 scientifically proven health and safety hazards that are common in older homes, including falls, fires, moisture and mold, asthma and allergies, and toxic exposures such as carbon monoxide.
An investment in RTGC repairs homes, revitalizes communities, and rebuilds lives.
"I feel so much better since I don't have to worry about falling," said Carol Minor, a homeowner who received modifications such as placing additional grab bars in the bathroom, removing the tub for easier access, and building a ramp into the home. "I am so grateful for all of my blessings, and I am so happy for all of the hard work, peace, and kind understanding."
