Novant Health Volunteers Provide Critical Repairs Through RTGC

On Feb. 9, an unseasonably warm February morning in Charlotte, a group of 10 volunteers from Novant Health gathered around Tim Ireland, Rebuilding Together of Grater Charlotte’s Construction Manager, at a home in the Hidden Valley neighborhood to learn about their tasks for the day.
Ireland explained how they would be providing critical repairs and accessibility modifications for a homeowner in need.
These tasks, like adding handrails to the home entrance, installing easy-to-clean plank flooring, and remodeling a bathroom, are part of a larger project designed to provide a safe and healthy home for Bertram. A retired package delivery driver who’s lived in his home for almost 50 years, Bertram shared the home with his mother, where he helped care for her until she recently passed. He hopes to pass the home to other members of his family when the time comes and continue his family’s legacy in the historic neighborhood.
The group of Novant Health volunteers came from different areas within the organization — from IT to patient billing services — but they are always eager to give back to the community.
“When they send out opportunities, we love to sign up and show the community we care,” said Nia, one of the volunteers who regularly takes advantage when Novant Health shares chances to give back.
“We’ve done a lot of hands-on activities,” Nia said, while painting the front entry handrail, “but we see the direct impact of this work here, which is great.”
This group of volunteers got the opportunity to support neighbors in need through Novant Health’s generous sponsorship of Rebuilding Spirits 2023, RTGC’s annual holiday fundraiser. The sponsorship allowed Novant Health the chance to engage employees in team building while renewing their sense of community to each other and the city they work in.
RTGC’s critical repair and accessibility modification projects, provided at no cost to homeowners on low, fixed incomes like Bertram, allow them to safely age in place in their homes and communities.
Novant Health is a not-for-profit provider of healthcare services in North Carolina and South Carolina. Locally, they operate several regional medical facilities in the area, including the Hemby Children’s Hospital in Uptown Charlotte.
