Rebuilding Together of Greater Charlotte Expands Building a Healthy Neighborhood Program to East Charlotte
At Rebuilding Together of Greater Charlotte, we believe that everyone deserves to live in a safe and healthy home. Through our Building a Healthy Neighborhood (BaHN) program, we have been able to bring critical home repairs and community revitalization efforts to neighborhoods with significant housing needs. Today, we are thrilled to announce the expansion of BaHN into two East Charlotte neighborhoods: Hampshire Hills and Eastwood Acres!
This expansion is made possible through funding from United Way's United Neighborhoods program and substantial support from the City of Charlotte. These resources allow us to continue providing life-changing home repairs and community improvements, addressing safety and health hazards for homeowners in underserved pockets of East Charlotte. We are especially grateful to Greg Ascuitto, Executive Director of Charlotte EAST, for serving as the community quarterback for this initiative. Greg has been instrumental in connecting us with local leaders, homeowners, and partners, ensuring that our outreach efforts are as impactful as possible.
Expanding Our Impact on Charlotte’s East Side
This marks the first time Rebuilding Together of Greater Charlotte has had a dedicated neighborhood focus on the East side of Charlotte. We are building on the success of our longest-standing neighborhood investment in Hidden Valley, where we have completed critical repairs on nearly 70 homes over the last few years. We are eager to bring our expertise and collaborative approach to Hampshire Hills and Eastwood Acres, helping homeowners preserve their homes and strengthen their community.
BaHN is also actively operating in four neighborhoods in North Mecklenburg—Davidson West, Pottstown, Smithville, and East Catawba—through the support of United Neighborhoods (United Way), Mecklenburg County, the NC Housing Finance Agency, the Town of Davidson, and the Davidson Community Foundation. As we expand into East Charlotte, we look forward to fostering partnerships that will help us maximize our impact.
About Building a Healthy Neighborhood
BaHN is more than just a home repair program—it’s a comprehensive, community-driven initiative designed to create lasting neighborhood change. By integrating Rebuilding Together’s strategic community development approach, the Community Revitalization Partnership, and our core Safe and Healthy Housing model, we address the root causes of housing instability. Our work advances health equity by improving housing conditions in economically distressed communities, ensuring that homeowners can live safely in their homes for years to come.
Our experience has shown that systematic, coordinated approaches are necessary to enhance quality of life at both the individual and community level. That’s why our Community Revitalization Partnership model calls for a deeper, longer-term focus (a minimum of one year) in each neighborhood. By concentrating our efforts in specific communities and aligning with local organizations, service providers, and community leadership, we improve not only individual homes but also the overall health and safety of entire neighborhoods.
Looking Ahead
As we begin our work in Hampshire Hills and Eastwood Acres, we are excited to meet homeowners, engage with community members, and strengthen partnerships that will sustain this effort for years to come. We believe that a safe home is the foundation for a thriving community, and we are honored to bring our mission to East Charlotte.
