[Re]Building Takes a Full Team

On Nov. 10, Rebuilding Together of Greater Charlotte’s Board of Directors and staff members volunteered to provide critical home repairs and accessibility modifications for a neighbor in need in Hidden Valley at the quarterly Board/Staff Build Day.

Held once every quarter, these build days, led by RTGC’s trained construction team, provide an opportunity for board and staff members to make a direct impact on low-income homeowners by volunteering on a repair project. These days serve as a regular reminder of the how RTGC helps prevent homelessness and displacement in Greater Charlotte.

Board members who volunteered that day represented Ally Financial, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Resilia, Vision 21 Construction & Development, and more.

Tasks for this project, held at a home in the Building a Healthy Neighborhood program site of Hidden Valley, included replacing flooring, replacing light fixtures, and demoing a deck to prep for installation of a new one — just a few of the tasks RTGC completes on a project to provide safe and healthy homes.

Friday’s project was the first Board/Staff Build Day for several new team members. For Erin Fisher, who began working for RTGC in September as the community engagement coordinator, it served as a powerful reminder of the real impact this work has on the community.

“When you make a repair to a home, you immediately see the impact on the homeowner,” she said. “It was powerful to see the impact our staff has every day and meet some of the homeowners we are working with.”

These board and staff build days represent also showcase the importance of community involvement in completing these projects that serve low-income homeowners. A simple act of neighbors helping neighbors in 1978 launched the Rebuilding Together network.

“Don’t feel like you need to be an expert in home repairs to help out,” said Fisher. “Our staff will patiently teach you whatever you need to know to be successful.”

Through volunteering time, talents, or treasure, you can help neighbors in need through RTGC.
