A group of about 20 volunteers from Lowe’s, The Lowe’s Foundation, and partner vendors provided a series of critical repairs and accessibility modifications for two neighbors in need on Thursday, March 14 with Rebuilding Together of Greater Charlotte.

Vendors represented at the event included Simpson Strong Tie, GE Lighting, MVP Building Materials, and MVP Electrical. Vendors received the opportunity to volunteer with Rebuilding Together of Greater Charlotte and Lowe’s representatives at an earlier event hosted by The Lowe’s Foundation.

After a quick breakfast, the volunteers split into two teams working on homes nearby one another in the historic Hidden Valley neighborhood of Charlotte. In total, the group of about 20 volunteers contributed more than 80 hours of critical home repairs and accessibility modifications across the two homes over the course of the day.

Thanks to the combined efforts of the volunteers, many items on each individual home’s scope of work were completed, including:

  • removing the unsafe subfloor in one bathroom,

  • removing and replacing carpet with laminate flooring,

  • installing new lighting fixtures for improved visibility,

  • cleaning and repairing gutters,

  • adding visible house numbers to help with identification,

  • replacing nonfunctional light fixtures and smoke alarms.

In the middle of the day, the group paused to eat lunch at nearby Hidden Valley Elementary on picnic tables provided by RTGC in an earlier community project before returning to the homes.

These tasks improved the safety ratings of each home as work continues on larger projects in each homes’ scopes of work. The average costs of one of RTGC’s critical repair and accessibility modifications projects is about $25,000 - $30,000.
